Turkey Treats

I made these quick and easy turkey treats for my family. The original recipe comes from Taste of Home. You can find the original here. They're really easy especially if you know how to make rice krispie treats. Happy Thanksgiving!

Turkey Treats
makes 6-8
  • 1 1/2 Tbsp margarine or butter
  • 2 cups miniature marshmallows
  • 3 cups cocoa krispies
  • 9 Oreo cookies
  • a small package of candy corn
  • frosting to use as glue (I just buy a little squeezy tube of icing)

In a saucepan, melt butter over low heat. Add marshmallows; stir over low heat until melted. Remove from heat and add cocoa krispies. Mix well. Allow to cool for 10 minutes. Form the mixture into 1 1/2 inch balls. Use some frosting glue to attach your ball to a whole oreo. Twist apart the remaining oreos and use some 'glue' to attach them to the back of each turkey. You can then add a small strip of 'glue' where the oreo meets the turkey to attach the candy corn for the feathers. I push my in between the cookie and the body a little bit. Finally use a dab of 'glue' to attach the candy corn head to the body. I pop mine in the fridge for a few minutes to help the frosting/glue set.

Time for Christmas craftiness

I survived! I survived driving a five day trip from Alabama to Utah with my two munchkins in the car and a very pregnant belly. I drove the entire trip (my husband drove the other car), thank goodness for loose muscles when your pregnant. My back didn't bother me at all. So now that we are living in Utah for the next four years, it was time to unpack. Our main living areas are finished but we still have a ton of boxes to unpack and projects galore. We're going to buy cabinets for my craft area today! So much of my craft stuff is still in boxes, but I'm itching to do something. It's been so long and Christmas is fast approaching. So, I thought I would share last year's projects.
First up is a reindeer gift card holder. The pattern can be found on My Little Mochi's blog. She offers the pattern for free. I had to make various sizes since some gift cards are credit card sized and others are much larger.
There's a snap under the flap so he stays closed.

Next up are some gift tags that I made last year.

This is a Christmas countdown garland that I made. This pattern is courtesy of All Sorts. She has other free patterns on her blog that are so adorable.

A mouse candy cane holder. This pattern came form Martha Stewart's Holiday magazine a year or so ago.

A cocoa tin and an ornament for my sons' teachers.

A garland that my dear cricut cut out. I still haven't finished it.

3-D circle ornaments

I am going to try to describe how I made the 3D circle paper ornaments. I had the directions on my old blog but I deleted it before saving the directions, so I'm going to start over with this blog. Last year I bought the Martha kit for these ornaments and decided that her colors didn't really work for me and my tree, so I made some in the colors and size that I wanted.

I used my cricut to cut out 20 1.5" circles. Then I just made a triangle tracing template that had sides that were 1.25" so that it would fit perfectly inside my circle. The glue pens that you can find at craft stores are perfect for this project since the area that you glue is pretty small. The scissors, hole punch, and ribbon will be for attaching your ribbon at the end so you can hang the ornament.

After you have your 20 circles, you will need to choose which side will be the showing part of the ornament. I wanted the polka dots to show so I traced around the triangle on the opposite side of the paper. You do this for all of your circles.

Next, your going to fold on those lines that you just traced. Your folding towards your good side that you want showing. You'll notice that my folded circles are grouped into fives. That's because your going to glue together five circles to form the sections. You will do this with three of the groups. The last set of five circles will create a foursome and a lone circle.

So start with your first group of five circles and start by gluing an edge and connecting it to another circle. Keep going around until you have done five and then glue the first and last circle together.
A finished group should look like this on the inside.
Repeat with two more groups of five. Look carefully at how the final group is glued. You will only glue together 4 circles for the last group and you will have one circle left over. The foursome is glued together a bit differently. You basically take one circle and connect a circle to each of its sides.

Now is where I'm sure I'll lose some of you. Just keep in mind that you are trying to create a ball. Take the lone circle and glue it's edge to one of your groups of five. It doesn't matter where.

Now, connect the other side of the not-so-lone circle to another group of five.

Here's what you should have when you look at it from the inside of the ball.

Now, on the final side of that lone circle that you began with, glue the final group of five.

Now your going to start connecting some sides.

You won't glue all of the sides because you still have the last mini group of four to attach to the top. You'll glue all of the remaining tabs and connect the group of four.

Now your ready to punch a hole and attach your ribbon. I know the final gluing steps are really confusing, that's why I tried to take lots of pictures. If you have any questions please don't hesitate to email me at turkeyfarm@aol.com . You can make larger ornaments but you will need to create a new triangle template that fits inside the circle so that the points touch the edges of the circle.

Candy corn cake and sugar cookies

Wow, two posts in one day! I know Halloween is over, but I wanted to share some sweet treats that we enjoyed. The first is the candy corn colored cake that I just had to try. The second and third pictures are sugar cookies that a fellow Air Force spouse made for us. She taught a group of us how to make and decorate sugar cookies like her. Hers are so gorgeous. They're like glass and they taste so amazing! I aspire to decorate cookies like her :o)

A Thanksgiving card/recipe

Sorry for the long periods between posts. We are currently in a hotel for the rest of this week before we embark on our five day drive to Utah. We are really excited and can't wait to get there and get settled in. How I miss my bed. Being pregnant and sleeping in hotel beds is misery. Anyhow, since all of my crafting stuff has been taken by the movers I have to once again resort to a previous project. This was a card I made last year for stamp club. It's a criss-cross card with a Thanksgiving recipe inside. I used pick a petal for the turkey's feathers and my cricut to cut out the circles for the body.
