Christmas Sugar Cookies

I made some sugar cookies for our neighbors today. I was ready to give up and let the cookies win, but I stuck with it and finished decorating. I really wish I could be an expert cookie decorator already. Anyhow, I thought I would share some things that I learned about making sugar cookies that I wish I would have known years ago.
These cookies were inspired by one of my favorite cookie decorators on flickr.

Forget about flouring the counter to roll and cut out sugar cookies. Buy some of the rubbery shelf liner stuff, two 1/4" dowels and some wax paper. You just tape down the dowels so that they are a little narrower than your rolling pin then place your dough between two sheets of wax paper and roll until you get it down to the same thickness as the dowels. Now you are ready to cut out your cookies. This method is awesome because the dough peels off the wax paper and the cookies are 1/4" thick.

Bake on parchment paper, that way you don't have to wash your cookie sheets.
After your cookies have baked, flip them over onto a cooling rack lined with freezer paper. This will absorb the oil from the butter and create a cleaner surface for the icing.

Hi! I came across your blog today and I have to say I love it. You are very creative! I was wondering, however, what recipe you use for the frosting on your cookies. They look very shiny and mine has never come out that way. Thank you in advance for any help or advice you could give.

I LOVE your cookies, the icing is gorgeous. I also loved the advice with the dowel rods, now if you could help me out and tell me how you got the icing so wonderfully shiny and perfect! I have searched for the right ways to decorate cut out cookies. I love decorating them, but mine are not nearly that perfect. Mine look good, but yours are just beautiful!
