3-D circle ornaments

I am going to try to describe how I made the 3D circle paper ornaments. I had the directions on my old blog but I deleted it before saving the directions, so I'm going to start over with this blog. Last year I bought the Martha kit for these ornaments and decided that her colors didn't really work for me and my tree, so I made some in the colors and size that I wanted.

I used my cricut to cut out 20 1.5" circles. Then I just made a triangle tracing template that had sides that were 1.25" so that it would fit perfectly inside my circle. The glue pens that you can find at craft stores are perfect for this project since the area that you glue is pretty small. The scissors, hole punch, and ribbon will be for attaching your ribbon at the end so you can hang the ornament.

After you have your 20 circles, you will need to choose which side will be the showing part of the ornament. I wanted the polka dots to show so I traced around the triangle on the opposite side of the paper. You do this for all of your circles.

Next, your going to fold on those lines that you just traced. Your folding towards your good side that you want showing. You'll notice that my folded circles are grouped into fives. That's because your going to glue together five circles to form the sections. You will do this with three of the groups. The last set of five circles will create a foursome and a lone circle.

So start with your first group of five circles and start by gluing an edge and connecting it to another circle. Keep going around until you have done five and then glue the first and last circle together.
A finished group should look like this on the inside.
Repeat with two more groups of five. Look carefully at how the final group is glued. You will only glue together 4 circles for the last group and you will have one circle left over. The foursome is glued together a bit differently. You basically take one circle and connect a circle to each of its sides.

Now is where I'm sure I'll lose some of you. Just keep in mind that you are trying to create a ball. Take the lone circle and glue it's edge to one of your groups of five. It doesn't matter where.

Now, connect the other side of the not-so-lone circle to another group of five.

Here's what you should have when you look at it from the inside of the ball.

Now, on the final side of that lone circle that you began with, glue the final group of five.

Now your going to start connecting some sides.

You won't glue all of the sides because you still have the last mini group of four to attach to the top. You'll glue all of the remaining tabs and connect the group of four.

Now your ready to punch a hole and attach your ribbon. I know the final gluing steps are really confusing, that's why I tried to take lots of pictures. If you have any questions please don't hesitate to email me at turkeyfarm@aol.com . You can make larger ornaments but you will need to create a new triangle template that fits inside the circle so that the points touch the edges of the circle.
